American workers will rebuild the nation's roads and bridges, modernize its schools and create more sources of alternative energy, creating 2.5 million jobs by 2011, President-elect Barack Obama said today in the weekly Democratic address. He posted the video message on his Web site.

One man died and another was in serious condition Saturday evening after they were shot at a shopping center in Tukwila, Washington. A search for the shooter is currently under way, a police spokesman said.

President Bush, in what could be his final overseas trip as president, called on international leaders to continue his administration's push for free trade during the global financial crisis. After his speech, Bush held his last meeting as president with his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, saying he has worked hard to ensure a "cordial relationship" for the two countries.

Astronauts complete marathon spacewalk more»»
Astronauts from the shuttle Endeavour finished their third spacewalk Saturday after nearly seven hours working on a joint that helps generate power for the international space station. One more spacewalk is scheduled before the shuttle and station part ways on Thanksgiving. Inside, the crew continued work on systems designed to convert urine and sweat into water.

Obama picks his communications team more»»
Barack Obama's transition office today announced the team that will be charged with getting his White House's message out. His communications director will come from outside his existing team: Ellen Moran heads up EMILY's List, a women's political organization. Robert Gibbs, Obama's campaign spokesman, will be press secretary.
