Erich Scherfen served for 13 years in the U.S. military. After receiving an honorable discharge, he was hired as a pilot for a regional airline. In April, Scherfen learned that he was on a government terror watch list and would be suspended from his job. He was told he faced termination on September 1 unless he was able to clear his name.

The top contenders are also staying mum on the selection process as the vice presidential guessing game enters its final hours. Obama is expected to appear at a rally with his running mate in Illinois on Saturday.

Fay floods 8,000 homes in Florida more similar news »
Tropical Storm Fay moved off the east coast of Florida early today after spawning at least seven tornadoes, the National Hurricane Center reported. The storm is expected to get stronger and make a hard left back into the northeastern part of the state. "Looks like it could be a boomerang storm," said Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.

More than 200,000 children were spanked or paddled in U.S. schools during the past school year, human rights groups reported today. "Corporal punishment discourages learning, fails to deter future misbehavior and at times even provokes it," wrote Alice Farmer, the author of a joint report from Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union.
