Obama, Clinton discuss top State Department job more similar news »
Democratic sources tell CNN that President-elect Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton had a "serious discussion" Thursday to gauge Clinton's interest in the post of secretary of state, if she were offered it. Clinton's response is unknown, although multiple sources agree that she was left with the impression that if she were interested in the post, it would be hers.

A brush fire roaring through the canyons of Santa Barbara County, California, forced residents in the town of Montecito to evacuate as flames engulfed multimillion-dollar homes and more modest ranch-style houses. As many as 100 homes have burned, the city of Santa Barbara reported on its Web site. Large homes continued to burn this morning.

On the day President-elect Obama visited the White House, a new national poll suggested that the current occupant at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is the most unpopular president since approval ratings were first measured more than six decades ago. Seventy-six percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Monday disapprove of how President Bush is handling his job. That's an all-time high in polling by CNN or Gallup dating back to World War II.
