Derek James is taking just one of his two 1988 Chevy Caprice cars to the 14th annual Woodward Dream Cruise classic-car show outside Detroit this week. Like many car enthusiasts, the 25-year-old Pontiac, Mich., resident has put a big engine into his car. This year, he added a smaller carburetor and an extra gear to save fuel. He also cut back on the cruising that's a big part of car shows because of gas prices near $4 a gallon. "You don't see as many cars out as you used to," James said. "I don't even take mine out as much as I used to." Classic-car shows across the USA are still attracting crowds similar or just a bit smaller than previous years this summer. Dream Cruise spokesman Don Tanner says the event is expected to draw more than 40,000 cars and 1 million spectators Saturday, about the same as last year.But owners and organizers say participants are making adjustments, such as going only to shows near home, tweaking their cars for better mileage and skimping on hotels and...
